Description from the seller
Germany. Frankfurt. 1 Kreuzer. 1863.
- Value: 1 Kreuzer.
- Year: 1863.
- Inscriptions: Obverse: STADT FRANKFURT. Reverse: 1 KREUZER · 1863.
- Grade: MS61 (NGC).
1 Kreuzer silver coin minted by the Free City of Frankfurt in 1863, a few years before its annexation by the Kingdom of Prussia. The obverse features the imperial eagle with a single head and wings spread, a traditional emblem of the free city, surrounded by the legend STADT FRANKFURT, in a heraldic-inspired design executed with great sobriety. The reverse shows the face value 1 Kreuzer and the issue date, framed by an elegant crown formed by laurel and oak branches joined at the bottom, characteristic of Frankfurt fractional issues. The specimen retains an excellent condition, with well-defined reliefs, uniform fields and much of the original mint luster, presenting only light contact marks in line with the MS61 grade awarded by NGC. This issue belongs to the last coins minted by the Free City of Frankfurt before losing its independence after the Austro-Prussian War of 1866, becoming an interesting testimony to the complex political and monetary landscape of pre-unification Germany.
