Boulon Statue

Boulou Statue

This zoomorphic figure, reminiscent of a monkey and even a gorilla in particular, has a disproportionately large head. Its abdomen is spherical. The arms are long and stretched along the body while the legs are bent.

The expressiveness of the face is heightened by the relief of its features as well as by the white and gray pigments used on the eyes and mouth.

This is a constant in Boulou art, where the primate serves as a source of inspiration as a totemic animal.

Located in the border area between Cameroon and Gabon, the Boulou are part of the Fang group. Like the Fang of southern Cameroon, famous for their large white masks, the Boulou also practiced the Ngil ritual to fight witchcraft and poisonings. Ngi is the gorilla, the formidable animal with which the postulant identifies after acceptance into the secret society. Their gorilla statues stand out for their round, simple forms, as well as a great accuracy in the observation of the magnificent Boulou statue.
