In African art one finds a multitude of variations of these everyday objects, especially in the eastern regions of Africa. A curved seating surface whose edge is decorated with a fine crenellation cherished by Hemba artists is supported by a Caryatid head of an ancestor similar to Singiti statues, with their beards and their cross-hotted (grid-pattern) headdress pulled back. In the southeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Hemba peoples occupy vast plains surrounded by high hills and bounded by waterways, rocks, or swamps.
