Description from the seller

LARGE antique Russian four-panel icon with "Theotokos Joy Unexpected, Theotokos Joy of All Who Sorrow, Theotokos Searching for the Lost" and St. Nicholas of Myra from the 19th century (circa 1880).

Hand-painted with egg tempera colors on a wooden panel with a chalk ground and a gold ground.

Typical method of icon painting in 18th- and 19th-century Tsarist Russia. The motifs are fairly widespread and very popular in the Orthodox Church.

This is an Old Believer icon, likely produced on commission. The painting is quite masterful and detailed (see photos).

Perfectly coordinated color contrasts and successful shading. The painting contains very authentic craquelure (see photos).

The painting style and color arrangement suggest that this icon was produced in the well-known painter village of "Vetka".

Partial restorations are present (see photos). Especially expressive and striking are the faces of the saints (see photos). The saints are inscribed. The inscriptions are clearly legible.

On the back, both cross-spoonkas are attached. Stable and solid wooden panel.

The icon is in good condition with typical age-related signs of use (see photos).

On the back of the icon there is a vertical crack!!! (see photos). This runs through the entire icon. The painting is not damaged by the crack. The wooden panel remains stable and solid despite the crack.

An icon for collectors and connoisseurs of the subject.

All details are clearly visible in the photos. Photos are an integral part of the description.

Dimensions: 44.5 x 37 x 3 cm
