Mumuyé ancestor wooden statue from Nigeria, 60 cm high, in good condition, sold with a stand, original.
Description from the seller
Origin. Nigeria
Tribe name. Mumuye
Material. Wood
Dimension. 60 cm
Shipping method. Colissimo within 24-48h open.
The piece presented is a traditional Mumuyé sculpture (originating in eastern Nigeria), characterized by its stylized and expressive aesthetics.
Structure elongated: The figure stands out with a slender silhouette, typical of Mumuyé art, with a stretched neck and a slim trunk.
Facial expression: The face is marked by prominent features. The mouth is slightly open, revealing a row of teeth, which gives the piece a dynamic expression or perhaps charged with a spiritual intention. The eyes are represented by simple circular hollows.
Anatomical shapes:
Bust: The chest is clearly defined by two conical shapes pointing forward.
Abdomen: The belly has a curved, prominent shape that contrasts with the fineness of the torso.
Limbs: The arms descend along the body, while the legs are slightly bent, suggesting a standing, dynamic and balanced posture.
Base: The piece is mounted on a modern black base that provides stability and highlights its verticality.
These sculptures were traditionally used by the Mumuyé as figures of divination, protection or to represent ancestors, playing a key role in community rituals.
