Description from the seller

On auction this rare Oberhauser camera lucida, I believe this is an original camera lucida despite lacking a maker's name. Search for Oberhauser camera lucida and you will see what I found. It dates to ca. 1840 and looks complete. See pictures. There are also 4 objectives, marked 1, 3, 5 and 1 unmarked. Maybe for an Oberhauser microscope.

This instrument was sold by A van Emden in Amsterdam, shop and work from 1831-1855 Kalverstraat 55.

This type of camera lucida was first constructed by Georges Oberhauser about 1839. It is therefore referred to as an Oberhauser type. It has the advantage of allowing one to work with the microscope in a vertical position, which would be helpful when drawing images of subjects in liquid for instance. It has a reflecting prism to direct the light down the horizontal tube to a special eyepiece and from there to the drawing prism. The disadvantage of this device is, the image is not bright enough to use with high powers. This is due to the extra prism.
