Description from the seller
Recumbent Spectacles – Patents Pending – Made in England, Circa 1920-1930
An unusual and ingenious pair of early twentieth-century recumbent spectacles, marked "Recumbent Spectacles – Patents Pending – Made in England". Designed to enable reading while reclining, the spectacles are fitted with prism lenses that redirect the line of sight, allowing the user to read comfortably whilst lying on their back.
The spectacles feature black prism housings mounted within a lightweight metal frame with wire temples, reflecting the practical and innovative approach to optical design during the interwar period. The "Patents Pending" marking indicates an early production example manufactured while patent protection was still being sought.
Combining functionality with inventive engineering, these spectacles provide a fascinating insight into the development of specialist optical aids during the first half of the twentieth century.
An appealing and increasingly uncommon collector's item for enthusiasts of optical instruments, scientific apparatus, medical history and vintage eyewear.
Good vintage condition with age-related wear consistent with use. The metal frame displays minor surface wear and oxidation, while the prism lenses remain present and intact. The spectacles have been tested and function as intended. They present well overall and retain their original character. Please refer carefully to the photographs, which form an integral part of the description.
