Wood
Height: 145mm
Width: 170mm
Length: 860mm
This Awalé board, belonging to the great family of mancala games, measures 86 cm in length. This particularly significant dimension makes it a prestige object of West Africa, originating from Ivory Coast and carved within the Dan (also called Yacouba) ethnicity.
Object analysis allows us to detail its structure and understand its traditional functions.
1. Stylistic Characteristics and Morphology
This board, carved from a single block of dense wood (monoxyle), testifies to the Dan sculptors’ excellence for utilitarian prestige objects:
• The Game Space: The board presents the classic 12-hole configuration (2 rows of 6 holes), typical of the Awalé variant. The central edge separating the two rows is adorned with small geometric relief motifs, in the shape of elongated diamonds evoking stylized cowries or traditional scarifications.
• The Lateral Receptacles: At each end, connected by a curved section acting as a handle, are two large hemispherical deep cups. They serve as reservoirs to store seeds captured during the game.
• The Pedestal: The underside of the board is characterized by four massive, quadrangular corner feet carved in the mass. This low-type pedestal provides a perfect base when the game is placed on the ground or on a mat, protecting the body of the game from moisture. You can also see magnificent traces of whittling and a patina of rugged use.
2. Functional Use and Social Status among the Dan
Beyond its ludic-educational aspect, an Awalé of this size holds major social, political, and symbolic importance:
• A Game of Strategy and Calculation: Awalé is a pure thinking game (no chance) based on the distribution and capture of seeds (often seeds from the Caesalpinia bonduc tree). The goal is to “feed” one’s side and capture the opponent’s marbles. It is a traditional tool for learning quick calculation and sociability.
• A Prestige Object for Notables: With its 86 cm length, this board far exceeds the size of common portable models. It is an object of a dignitary, intended to sit in the court of a family head, a notable, or under the meeting house. Displaying such a board affirmed the social rank, prosperity, and power of its owner within the Dan community.
• Ritual and Arbitration Role: In traditional society, Awalé games between elders and chiefs sometimes served to peacefully defuse conflicts, to make crucial communal decisions, or to test the wit of a suitor for a political position. The circular movement of seeds is also linked to agricultural symbolism (sowing and harvesting) or cosmological symbolism (the cycle of time).
In summary
This 86 cm Awalé is a magnificent piece of Dan mastery. Its streamlined monoxyle structure, supported by four rigid feet and its generous end cups, make it as much a tool of high social strategy as a symbol of communal power and prestige.
