Description from the seller

Russian Orthodox brass icon of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker – 19th century

Beautiful Russian Orthodox brass icon depicting Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker (Nicholas of Myra), rendered in relief. This type of icon belongs to the most beloved depictions of saints within the Orthodox tradition and was used as a household icon and personal protective object.

Description
The icon shows Saint Nicholas frontally portrayed as a bishop, with his right hand raised in a blessing gesture and a Gospel book in his left hand. He is recognizable by his episcopal robes and nimbus. Above his shoulders are Christ and the Mother of God depicted, who hand him the Gospel book and the omophorion (bishop's mantle) respectively. This depiction refers to the Orthodox tradition in which Saint Nicholas was affirmed in his episcopal office by Christ and Mary after the Council of Nicaea.

At the bottom there are two smaller saints figures, while Cyrillic inscriptions surround the depiction. The sober yet refined execution and the expressive facial features are typical of Russian cast icons from the 19th century.
