Russian Orthodox brass icon of Christ Pantocrator on the throne – 19th century

Beautiful Russian Orthodox brass icon depicting Christ Pantocrator seated on a throne, flanked by the Mother of God and John the Baptist. This type of icon belongs to the most central depictions within the Orthodox tradition and was used as a home icon and a personal devotional object.

Description
The icon centrally shows Christ Pantocrator, seated on an elaborately worked throne. He raises His right hand in a blessing gesture and holds an opened Gospel book in His left hand. On the sides are the Mother of God and John the Baptist, who turn toward Christ in a respectful pose.

The depiction is executed in high relief with refined detailing of the throne, robes and halos. Cyrillic inscriptions above the figures identify the depiction. The composition emphasizes Christ as ruler over heaven and earth and forms a beloved theme within Russian Orthodox iconography.

The brass surface has developed a beautiful dark patina with age, which adds extra depth and character to the relief.
