Description from the seller
Circa 1880, 20x26 cm.
"Epiciers arabes", very beautiful vintage albumen print, in excellent condition with preserved contrasts, grayscale nuances and levels of detail from Very Good to Superb, by Jean Garrigues.
The interest of this print is that it is not mounted on an album page or cardboard support, which is rare.
Labeled and signed at the bottom of the print, in the negative.
Rare, unstaged subject, in situ.
Deserves to be framed.
Will be shipped with its neutral pH sleeve (ideal for a collection in good condition).
Jean Garrigues was active in Tunisia at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, in a context of photographic growth linked to the protectorate and the development of tourism. Photographer and publisher, he produced urban views, scenes of daily life and portraits distributed as prints and postcards.
His work is characterized by clear light and a clean composition, attentive to architecture, markets and local figures, across a production that is both documentary and commercial.
