Mendiants kabyles, an albumen print circa 1880 in 19 × 26 cm, attributed to J. Garrigues (XIX) and in very good to extremely good condition with preserved contrast and details, not mounted on album leaves, legended at lower left, and provided with a neutral pH sleeve for shipping.
Description from the seller
Circa 1880, 19 x 26 cm.
"Mendiants kabyles", a very beautiful vintage albumen print, in very good condition, with preserved contrasts, gray tones and levels of detail from TB to TTB, attributed to Jean Garrigues.
The appeal of this print is that it is not mounted on an album page or cardboard support, which is rare.
Labeled at the bottom left of the print, in the negative.
Rare subject, unposed, in situ.
It deserves framing.
Will be shipped with its neutral pH sleeve (ideal for a collection kept in good conditions).
Jean Garrigues was active in Tunisia at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, in a context of photographic growth linked to the protectorate and the development of tourism. Photographer and publisher, he produced urban views, scenes of daily life and portraits distributed as prints and postcards.
His work is characterized by a clear light and a clean composition, attentive to architecture, markets and local figures, through a production that is both documentary and commercial.
