Description from the seller

Silver Ducaton (10 Stuivers / 60 Schellingen) – Province of Zeeland – 1687

A handsome silver Ducaton (10 Stuivers / 60 Schellingen) struck in 1687 at the Middelburg Mint for the Province of Zeeland, one of the principal maritime provinces of the Dutch Republic. Ducatons of Zeeland played an essential role in both European commerce and the overseas trade of the Dutch East and West India Companies, circulating widely throughout the seventeenth century. The obverse depicts the traditional standing armoured knight holding an upright sword beside the crowned provincial coat of arms of Zeeland, symbolizing the province’s sovereignty and military readiness. The reverse displays the crowned shield surrounded by the coats of arms of the six cities of Zeeland, together with the denomination 10 Stuivers / 60 Schellingen, an iconic design unique to this impressive provincial issue. This example retains attractive original silver surfaces with pleasing natural toning and well-preserved details, making it a particularly desirable specimen from the Dutch Golden Age.
