AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

China, Canton (Guangzhou), Early to Mid-18th Century

A refined Chinese Canton Export folding fan, crafted with finely hand-carved bone guards and sticks (bone, not ivory), retaining its original double-sided embroidered silk leaf. Produced in the celebrated workshops of Canton during the Qing dynasty, such fans were created for the European export market and were highly prized luxury accessories among the European aristocracy.

The silk leaf is exquisitely embroidered on both sides with different decorative compositions. One side depicts elegant flowering branches with birds perched amongst the blossoms, a traditional symbol of harmony, prosperity and the arrival of good fortune. The reverse is embroidered with flowering branches and butterflies, representing happiness, love, longevity and the joyful beauty of spring. The delicate silk embroidery, combined with the finely carved bone framework, reflects the remarkable craftsmanship for which Canton export works became internationally renowned.

More than a practical accessory, this fan is an elegant example of early Chinese export art, illustrating the cultural exchange between Qing China and Europe. Today it is highly appreciated as both a decorative object and a collectible piece of historical craftsmanship.

Dimensions: Length 29.5 cm.

Condition: Good antique condition. The fan opens and closes smoothly and remains structurally sound, with age-related wear consistent with its considerable age. As a delicate antique of approximately 250–300 years, it is recommended for display rather than regular use and would make an excellent framed display piece.
