Watercolour map titled Rundetårn, by an anonymous publisher in Denmark for Copenhagen, dating from 1821–1850, with contemporary hand colour and in good condition; sheet 46 by 35 cm, depicting the Trinitatis complex with the Round Tower and Trinitatis Church in Copenhagen.
Description from the seller
Finely hand-coloured watercolour from the Biedermeier period, c. 1830. Original. Depicts the famous Trinitatis complex with the Round Tower (Rundetarn) and the adjoining Trinitatis Church (Trinitatis Kirke) in Copenhagen, Denmark. The complex uniquely combined three important functions for the University of Copenhagen: the Trinitatis Kirke as a church for students and the local congregation; a large university library in the spacious attic directly above the nave; and the Round Tower, which served as an astronomical observatory and is now the oldest functioning observatory in Europe.
Size of illustration: approx. 22 x 33.5 cm, sheet size: 35 x 46
Condition
Painted with great finesse, the sheet is somewhat browned and stained; it is on handmade paper bearing the watermark ‘C & I Honig’, from the famous Dutch paper mill, with traces of a former mount remaining at the top of the margin verso
