Description from the seller

Female figure Mbala, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kwilu region (southwest).

Rare anthropomorphic sculpture belonging to the classical corpus and sought-after Mbala statuary, remarkable for the quality of its execution and the balance of its forms. The figure stands upright, in a stable and restrained posture, the body slightly bent, accentuating presence and monumentality despite measured proportions. The protruding belly, powerful legs, and feet firmly planted translate a sculptural conception based on fertility, vitality, and earthly anchoring.

The treatment of the face is particularly careful and constitutes one of the strengths of this work. Almond-shaped, half-closed eyes are set in a face with well-structured planes, with pronounced brow ridges, a straight nose, and a finely sculpted mouth, giving the whole an inner, almost meditative expression. The architectural coiffure, typical of Mbala figures, reinforces verticality and places the sculpture in a perfectly identifiable typology. The gesture of the arms brought back to the torso contributes to this codified reading, where restraint and symbolic power combine with elegance.

The ancient patina, warm brown with deep nuances, shows wear and abrasions coherent with time and use, highlighting volumes and attesting to a long history of handling. The overall effect is homogeneous, expressive, and highly legible stylistically, fully corresponding to the rare Mbala figures of fine quality preserved in private and institutional collections.

Our Gallery: Héritage Galerie has established itself as a reference thanks to a rigorous selection and transparent presentation of the works. Each piece is accompanied by a documentation file compiling identification information, provenance details, and a synthesis of our study on the context and ritual use. We are based in Belgium and guarantee fast worldwide shipping, within 24 hours, insured and tracked, with careful packaging. We remain reachable and responsive seven days a week to ensure a serene purchase, before and after the sale.
