Description from the seller
Beautiful small antique globe designed by Christiaan Leendert van Balen and published by J.B. Wolters around 1920.
These globes were used from 1900 to 1930 in training study for teachers in mathematical geography, "to be used in the study for the teaching certificate".
The globe was supplied as part of the method, together with the textbook Mathematical Geography. The globes were in turn used by teachers to be used by the students in the geography lessons.
The globe is made of papier-mâché and covered with 12 map segments. The sphere sits in a tin graded meridian ring and these rest in a tin stand, whose horizon ring is printed with the zodiac and calendar.
These small globes are important for Dutch geography history, and as such there is also one in the National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam.
They are also important for the history of the globe, and are depicted in most reference works and are noted for their importance.
The color of the globes is still unusually fresh; usually they are much more brown-toned. In one or two spots the map image is a little faded, as to be expected because of their age. The stand also shows a few rust spots, which also fits its age.
These globes are now very rare and a highly sought-after collectible. This is therefore an excellent opportunity to acquire a globe that has been instrumental in the development of the globe in the 20th century. Additionally, it is simply a very beautiful object and will be an eye-catcher everywhere.
Also look carefully at the photos, they form an important part of the description.
