Authentic Chinese ginger jar, ceramic, dating to circa 1900–1910, hexagonal Shiwan stoneware with a deep green-blue glaze and relief floral decoration, measuring 12.5 × 13.5 × 12 cm and in good condition with minor signs of age.
Description from the seller
This characterful Chinese ginger jar from the late 19th to early 20th century is a wonderful example of traditional Shiwan stoneware. The hexagonal shape, the deep green-blue glaze, and the relief decorations with floral motifs give the object a powerful, artisanal look. The craquelé in the glaze and the natural color variations give the jar a warm, well-loved appearance that only time can create.
Such jars were originally used for storing ginger, tea, or spices. The Shiwan ovens in China's Guangdong province have been known for centuries for their robust stoneware with vivid lead glazes and relief decorations. In particular, hexagonal models with floral motifs from the early 20th century are beloved by collectors.
Today the jar is a stunning decorative object. It fits effortlessly into both a classical and a Japandi, wabi-sabi, or eclectic interior, and is beautifully displayed as a solo piece or with a branch or dried bouquet.
