Qing Dynasty blue-and-white ceramic ginger jar, circa 1850, hand-painted underglaze cobalt blue depicting a riverside landscape, with a height of 15.5 cm and a diameter of 16 cm, an authentic ginger pot.
Description from the seller
A warm, authentic mid-19th-century Chinese blue-and-white ginger jar, dating from around 1850. The jar is hand-painted with underglaze cobalt blue and features a continuous river landscape with pavilions, mountains, trees, and a traditional fisherman. This kind of idyllic landscape motif was a beloved decorative theme during the late Qing Dynasty and symbolizes peace, harmony, and a connection with nature.
Ginger jars were originally used to preserve and transport ginger, tea, herbs, and spices. From the 18th century and especially the 19th century, they grew into cherished export pieces and decorative objects in Europe. The characteristic bulbous shape with a narrow neck still makes the ginger jar a timeless collectible.
This jar possesses all the charm of an antique utilitarian object. The free brushwork, subtle glaze imperfections, and small kilnmarks testify to artisanal craftsmanship. Without a lid it forms a beautiful decorative object that fits equally well in a classical or modern interior.
