Description from the seller
Chinese porcelain brush cup with incised decoration – Republic period (ca. 1912–1949)
Refined Chinese porcelain brush cup (bitong) from the Republic period, executed in an elegant cylindrical form. The cup is decorated in a subtle grisaille technique with a finely incised decoration, giving the scene a particularly soft and painterly appearance.
The scene shows two ladies in an enclosed garden, absorbed in a book or album on a low table, surrounded by graceful willow trees and a blooming garden. The fine linework and subdued color palette emphasize the calm and refinement that characterize Chinese literary culture.
Brush cups were traditionally used on scholars' desks to store calligraphy and painting brushes. Today they are beloved collectibles due to their combination of artistic quality and historical significance.
The unglazed foot rim and the quality of the porcelain are characteristic of good productions from the Republic period.
