Polychrome carved and hand-painted wooden panel, circa 1900, in neoclassical decorative style, measuring 160 × 26 × 3 cm, made in Italy.
Description from the seller
Polychrome decorative wooden panel
Italy (or Alpine area), 18th–19th century (stylistic attribution)
Important decorative panel in carved and hand-painted wood, characterized by a refined ornamental composition in a neoclassical taste. The surface is divided into multiple decorative compartments enriched with festoons, floral garlands and multicolored botanical motifs, executed with careful painting technique.
An element of particular interest is the central oval medallion, in which a pair of small birds perched among vegetal elements are depicted. This subject, recurring in 18th and 19th-century decoration, recalls themes of domestic harmony, prosperity and union, contributing to give the artifact an elegant and refined character.
In terms of style, decorative arrangement and constructive characteristics, the panel can be traced to an Italian production or from the Alpine area between the late 18th and 19th centuries. It is plausible that it originally belonged to a high-quality furniture element, such as a door-head frieze, a boiserie, a ceiling panel, or the front of a chest or decorated cabinet.
The original polychromy is still largely preserved and presents a pleasant period patina. The piece shows normal signs of time, with wear, abrasions and small losses of the paint layer, fully compatible with its age and use, without compromising its remarkable decorative impact.
An object of considerable antique and collecting charm, suitable both for decorative arts collections and as a striking piece of furniture.
Dating: late 18th – 19th century (attribution based on stylistic characteristics).
Material: carved and hand-painted wood.
Technique: polychromy on a wooden support.
Conditions: good overall conservation, with original patina, wear and slight losses of the decoration coherent with the age of the artifact.
