Description from the seller

Origin: Democratic Republic of the Congo
Tribe name: Balega
Material: Wood
Dimension: 37 cm
Shipping method: Colissimo within 24-48h; open.

This piece shown is a Lega statuette (originating from the Democratic Republic of the Congo), characterized by a stylized and symbolic aesthetics unique to this culture.

Structure hybrid: The sculpture stands out for a composite form. It features a distinct human face at the lower part, surmounted by a long vertical extension recalling the neck and the stylized head of a bird or mythical animal.
Human face: The lower part of the body centers on a human face with features typical of Lega art: coffee-bean shaped eyes and a pronounced mouth. The forehead is carved with geometric motifs (diamond incisions).
Upper part: The elongated head, which dominates the piece, is very pared down. It presents a crest or a prominent central projection running along its front face, accentuating its zoomorphic appearance.
Display base: The piece is mounted on a contemporary black base, used to ensure its stability for display.
In the cultural context of the Lega, such statuettes, often linked to the Bwami initiation society, serve as ritual objects conveying moral and social teachings. The association of human and animal elements is common in this art to represent proverbs or complex philosophical concepts.
