In the upper right area a small fragment of the leaf gilding had come loose; it has been professionally reattached.
Russian/Orthodox icon “Assembly of the Archangels” – historically dated to the end of the 16th century
Large-format Orthodox icon depicting the Assembly of the Archangels. At the center appears Christ in a circular medallion, surrounded by an impressive host of angels and multi-winged seraphim. The composition is arranged hierarchically around the central Christ image and corresponds to the traditional iconography of the heavenly hosts.
The icon has a gold-colored background as well as a richly colored execution in red, blue, green and ochre. The angels wear nimbi and sometimes hold long staffs. The Cyrillic inscriptions in the upper area are still clearly legible; among them is “СЕРАФИМЫ” (Seraphim).
Technique: Tempera/Oil (?) on wood, gold-colored background
