5 Rupees commemorative coin issued by Ceylon in 1957 to celebrate the 2500th anniversary of Buddhism, a culturally and religiously significant event on the island. The obverse features an elaborate ornamental composition formed by inscriptions in Sinhala, Tamil and English, integrated in a symmetrical traditional-inspired design that incorporates stylized vegetal elements. The reverse shows the number “2500” in the center, surrounded by a rich circular sequence of animals and decorative motifs inspired by ancient Sinhala art, creating one of the most original compositions in twentieth-century Asian commemorative numismatics. The specimen preserves an attractive visual appearance consistent with the MS62 grade, with full relief, still perceptible original luster and a pleasant uniform silvery tone. The fields show slight contact marks typical of conservation in mint state, not affecting the overall beauty of this emblematic issue dedicated to one of the most relevant religious commemorations in the Buddhist world.
