Description from the seller

Maternity Scene Chokwe – Traditional childbirth

Chokwe Culture
Country Angola / Democratic Republic of the Congo
Object type: Anthropomorphic figure
Object posture: Figurative scene of childbirth

This rare work fits within a deeply rooted Chokwe tradition where sculpture is not limited to representation but to conveying essential moments of life.

Here the scene is unambiguous: a depiction of traditional childbirth, a fundamental moment in African societies where motherhood and fertility occupy a central place.

The central figure, lying down or leaning backward, is assisted by two other figures placed on either side. Their gesture is not incidental; it conveys active support, evoking the practices of feminine mutual aid during childbirth.

This composition powerfully illustrates the collective dimension of birth, a moment that transcends the individual to engage the group, the lineage, and the continuity of the community.

Among the Chokwe, as in many African cultures, motherhood carries fundamental values: fertility, prosperity, transmission, and social balance. This scene is a direct translation, almost documentary, yet sublimated by the sculptor’s gesture.

The figures are treated with elegance: elongated bodies, stylized faces, finely worked hairstyles—so many elements that reinforce cultural identity and the status of the characters.

The deep, warm brown patina of the surface bears witness to an object that has lived, been handled, preserved, and transmitted. It enhances the presence and authenticity of the piece.

This type of sculpture is particularly sought after because it combines rarity, aesthetic quality, and symbolic power. Few works address with such clarity and force the universal theme of birth.

A major piece, at once narrative, ethnographic, and deeply human, which will find its rightful place in a high-level collection.
