Aquamarine is the blue variety of the silicate mineral beryl and crystallizes, like it, in the hexagonal crystal system with the chemical composition Be3Al2[Si6O18].
Its blue color is due to trace amounts of iron ions (Fe2+ and Fe3+) occupying different lattice positions. As an allochromatic (foreign-colored) mineral, the line color of aquamarine is therefore always white. The color named after the gemstone is a vivid green-blue, but pale blue to dark blue beryls are also referred to as aquamarine.
Because of its high Mohs hardness of 7.5 to 8 and its often well-formed, clear crystals, aquamarine is mainly cut into gemstones for jewelry.
