Description from the seller
Beautiful naturally terminated crystal of emerald
Weight 30.60 carats
Origin pakistan (chitral)
Untreated and unheated (100% natural)
*Emerald* is the green variety of the mineral beryl, and the May birthstone.
*Key characteristics:*
- *Color*: Rich, deep green to bluish-green. The color comes from traces of chromium and sometimes vanadium. The most prized shade is a vivid "pigeon blood" green with medium to medium-dark tone.
- *Chemical formula*: $Be_3Al_2(SiO_6)_6 : Cr, V$ — beryllium aluminum silicate with chromium/vanadium
- *Hardness*: 7.5 to 8 on Mohs scale. Harder than peridot, but emerald is considered more delicate because of inclusions.
- *Clarity / Inclusions*: Almost always included. "Jardin" is the French term for the mossy, garden-like inclusions emeralds are known for. A stone with no visible inclusions is extremely rare and very expensive.
- *Luster*: Vitreous, glassy. Good emeralds have a velvety, deep glow rather than bright fire.
- *Refractive index*: 1.577 – 1.583, with weak birefringence.
- *Toughness*: 7.5-8 hardness, but poor toughness. It’s brittle and prone to cracking due to those inclusions, so it’s usually oiled or resin-treated to hide fissures and improve appearance.
- *Formation*: Forms in hydrothermal veins, often with pegmatites or schists. Major sources today: Colombia, Zambia, Brazil, and Ethiopia.
