Description from the seller
A pair of rare Chinese Imari shell-shaped bowls – Kangxi period (1662–1722)
A handsome and decorative pair of Chinese porcelain shell-shaped bowls from the Kangxi period (1662–1722), executed in the beloved Imari palette of underglaze cobalt blue, iron red and richly gilded.
The bowls are crafted in an elegant shell shape with a flat foot and are richly decorated with a symmetrical floral motif. The central medallion is surrounded by stylized flowering branches, cartouches and fretwork, executed in deep cobalt blue with vivid accents in iron red and refined gilding. The exterior is likewise richly painted with flowers and graceful ornaments, testifying to the high quality of the porcelain produced in this period for export.
Chinese Imari was specially produced for the European market from the late 17th century and was particularly beloved by the aristocracy. Shell-shaped bowls belong to the more refined and less common forms within this export porcelain.
Dimensions:
17 x 18.3 cm and 17.3 x 18.2 cm.
Condition: minimal wear/scratches, a few small flakes, 1 with edge cracks (see last photo).
