Description from the seller
Pair of antique painted ceiling boards – Italy, 19th century
Splendid pair of antique solid-wood ceiling boards, of Italian manufacture, dating to the 19th century. These are authentic decorative architectural elements from an old wooden ceiling, originally inserted between the structural beams to form the closure and ornament of coffered ceilings in historic palaces, noble residences, or prestigious homes.
The boards are entirely hand-decorated with tempera pigments and feature a refined polychrome composition. The surface is punctuated by a sequence of geometric insets framing elegant decorative motifs of 19th-century taste: floral scrolls, symmetrical volutes, phytomorphic elements, and arabesque decorations unfold harmoniously along the entire board, creating a refined chromatic and compositional balance. The decoration recalls the Italian artisan tradition of the Restoration and decorative eclecticism, where the richness of details was intended to valorize representative interiors.
Crafted in solid wood, they retain the authentic charm of the time, with the natural patina of age that attests to their antiquity and originality. Any signs of wear, minor abrasions, slight cracks, or imperfections should be regarded as inherent characteristics of the age and contribute to enhancing their historical and decorative value.
Today this pair of boards represents a rare example of Italian architectural salvage and is particularly appreciated by collectors, antique dealers, and interior designers. Thanks to their strong visual presence, they can be enhanced as wall panels, panelling, bed headers, exclusive furniture elements, or re-used in the restoration of historic ceilings, imparting timeless elegance to the spaces.
