Seal and counterseal of Étienne de Warelles, abbot of Saint-Ghislain (1317-1366)
Rare set consisting of a fragment of a medieval seal in brown wax accompanied by its green wax counter-seal, preserved with their old attachments.
The main seal depicts the abbot standing under Gothic architectural elements, while the counter-seal bears his coat of arms. Identified as that of Étienne de Warelles, abbot of the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Ghislain in the 14th century (1317-1366).
Historical piece originating from a vanished document, witness to the medieval monastic administration in the former Low Countries.
Fragmentary condition in keeping with age, with wear and losses.
