Beautiful Russian Orthodox icon known as the “monthly icon” or Menaion, probably created in the 19th century.
Egg tempera and gilded highlights on a wooden panel, featuring an illustrated liturgical calendar composed of numerous scenes and saints’ figures arranged in registers.
The decor is distinguished by rich polychromy, a luminous golden background, and an ornamental frame with geometric and floral motifs.
Some scenes notably depict the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, saints, martyrs, monks and Orthodox bishops. Inscriptions in ancient Cyrillic.
