Description from the seller
Ancient icon representing a triumphant saint knight – late 18th / early 19th century - Spain
Icon painted with tempera on a wooden panel, depicting a saint knight holding a red banner, moving in a scene of victory. The composition shows in the foreground a figure lying on the ground, probably a vanquished enemy, giving the overall image an iconography of a protective or warrior saint.
The knight, dressed in a dark habit cinched with red, is mounted on a light-colored horse whose harnesses are accented with red pigments. A cross appears in the background, reinforcing the religious character of the scene.
By its style, its loose proportions and its popular treatment, the work belongs to a devotional production of southern influence, possibly Iberian, evoking representations of Saint James Matamoros or of an assimilated military saint.
Dating: late 18th – early 19th century
Technique: tempera on wood
Origin: Southern Europe, Iberian influence
Significant wear, losses and alterations of the pictorial layer
The photos are an integral part of the description of the objects and complement the presentation. They allow one to appreciate their condition and characteristics. Please examine them carefully before any commitment
