Russian four-register icon – egg tempera and polychrome highlights on wood, Russia, 19th century.
Beautiful Orthodox icon composed of four compartments depicting Christ Pantocrator surrounded by several saints and sacred figures. The decoration features a rich ornamental gold background, engraved and painted, with geometric frames and multicolored floral motifs typical of certain popular Russian productions of the 19th century.
Christ blessing holds a scroll inscribed in Cyrillic. The finely radiating halos and the delicately punched backgrounds give a handsome decorative presence to the whole.
An authentic work of domestic devotion, created in egg tempera on a wooden panel.
Condition: wear, cracks, small losses and visible old restorations, in keeping with age and use. Beautiful overall patina.
