Description from the seller
Antique Solid Bronze Desktop Inkwell - Model “Mandolin and Musical Scores” - Complete with Original Glass - Late 1800s / Early 1900s
Splendid antique desk inkwell in solid bronze (1157 g), a superb example of Rococo / Belle Époque art (1890–1910) that can also be used as a paperweight or ashtray. The artisanal casting in earth presents a base with rolled and crumpled sheet music, complete with three-dimensional notes, musical clefs and acanthus leaves. On top rests a repoussé mandolin with a soundboard internally grooved in slats; the lid swivels on an era-appropriate smooth hinge, revealing the rare original transparent glass inkwell cup, intact and surviving. The back of the object is deliberately rough and porous, typical of the foundry mold, with no marks or subsequent welds. The lot is in excellent original condition, enhanced by a magnificent genuine patina that creates a strong contrast between the dark brown patina of the antique bronze and the golden highlights that emerge at the relief points.
