Description from the seller
Exceptionally Complete 19th-Century Antique Carat Weight Box (Trébuchet)
For sale: A museum-quality and nearly 100% complete set for diamantaires and jewelers from the 19th century. This pre-metric precision instrument was used in historic diamond centers such as Amsterdam or Antwerp. The set is in an excellent, authentic condition and stands out for its rare completeness.
Type: Antique pocket balance / carat weight box
Period: Late 19th century approx. 1870-1910 (for metric, from before 1913)
Key features and completeness
1. The Wooden Travel Case
Made from high-quality, shrinkage-free solid mahogany or walnut wood. Smooth, rounded corners for comfortable pocket transport. Fully recessed high-quality brass hinges. Working metal push-button lock (bolt). Original purple-blue velvet protective lining inside the carat weights.
2. The Hand Balance (Trébuchet)
Fully functional steel balance beam with central forks. Perfectly intact vertical zero-point needle (pointer). Two original, slightly hollow metal scales. Authentic, fine green silk suspension cords.
3. The Complete Range of Carat Weights
Complete main series of square block weights: 32, 16, 8, 4, 3, 2 and 1 carat. Includes the rare 3-carat weight. Various geometric fraction and laminate plates for weights under 1 carat. 1 shiny laminate weight marked with '20' (dots).
4. The Original Accessory Including the rare, loose gemstone tweezer with built-in scoop (pince à pelle). Made from steel/nickel silver with a brass scoop part. This component is missing from almost all comparable sets on the market.
Condition and Authenticity
The set is in a beautiful, unrestored condition with an honest, decades-long patina. There are no cracks in the wood or major damage to the mechanical parts. All weights and tools fit precisely in the handmade, specially cut compartments of the travel case.
