Description from the seller
18th Century Gilt Bronze Crucifix in the Late Baroque Style
A finely crafted 18th-century gilt bronze crucifix in the Late Baroque style, featuring a separately cast figure of Christ mounted on a trefoil-ended cross. The expressive corpus displays the elegant proportions and restrained realism characteristic of Catholic devotional art from the period. Above Christ is the original INRI plaque, while a radiant halo behind the head enhances the spiritual presence of the piece.
The reverse reveals the original hand-assembled construction with riveted fittings and reinforcing braces, reflecting traditional European craftsmanship of the era. Traces of the original fire-gilding remain beneath an attractive aged patina, giving the crucifix a rich historic character acquired over centuries of devotional use.
Height: 15 cm
Width: 7.8 cm
Weight: 34 g
Condition: Good overall antique condition with age-related wear, oxidation and losses to the original gilding. The skull (Memento Mori) from the base of the crucifix has become detached but is included, together with its original rivet. One rivet securing Christ’s arms has broken, and the crucifix would benefit from careful conservation or restoration. Please study the photographs carefully, as they form part of the description.
