Bactrian bronze ring with a thin D-shaped hoop and an engraved longitudinal oval bezel, dating to circa 1st Millennium BC, in good condition, internal diameter 2.0 cm (UK size O), acquired from a private collection in 2017 with provenance from an ex-Japanese collection.
Description from the seller
A Bactrian bronze ring featuring a D-shaped hoop and an engraved oval bezel. The hoop is thin and rounded, flaring slightly at the shoulders. The oval bezel is situated longitudinally and features seven short strokes, worn from age. Earthly encrustations and patination to the surface.
Bactria or Bactriana was an ancient country situated between the Hindu Kush and Amu Darya mountains. Its relevance centred around 600 BCE and 600 CE, as it served as a significant meeting place for Western and Eastern trade routes as well as being a central location for religious and artistic ideas. This meant large scale migration and resettlement of communities which resulted in a large circulation of new cultures and languages and an accumulation of vast wealth. Jewellery is such a wealth gained; these collections of rings pose as a suitable example.
Internal diameter: 2.0cm
Closest UK ring size: O
Provenance: Ex Japanese collection, deceased gentleman, acquired 1970s-2000s.
