Mask Bijagó - Guinea Bissau - Madeira - 40 cm

Legitimate and exceptional Bijagó zoomorphic mask from Guinea Bissau, collected "in situ" in the Bolama-Bijagós region - Canhabaque Island (The piece in question was offered by a friend who frequently travels to Guinea-Bissau).
The Bijagó masks play a central role in Bijagó traditional culture and religion. They are used mainly in initiation rites for boys and girls, as well as ceremonies connected to ancestors and spirits.

Estimated period: mid-20th century (1950 - 1960);
Dimensions: 40 x 50 x 31 cm;
Weight: 5.0 kg;

Condition: quite good, considering the piece’s age (crack in the left horn - see photos);

Legitima e excecional máscara zoomórfica Bijagó da Guiné Bissau, recolhida "in situ" na região de Bolama- Bijagós - Ilha de Canhabaque ( A peça em questão foi oferecida por um amigo que se desloca com frequência à Guiné-Bissau ). 
As máscaras Bijagós desempenham um papel central na cultura e na religião tradicional bijagó. São utilizadas sobretudo, em rituais de iniciação de rapazes e raparigas, assim como cerimónias ligadas aos antepassados e aos espíritos. 

Período estimado: meados do séc. XX ( 1950 - 1960 );

Estado de conservação bastante bom, tendo em consideração a idade da peça ( rachadura no chifre esquerdo - ver fotos );
