Description from the seller
A Chinese painted terracotta guardian or warrior figure, modelled standing and holding a decorated shield. The figure wears a cap or helmet, a short upper garment, and a long lower robe or trousers. The face retains white pigment, while the body and shield show traces of red, grey, and earthy painted decoration. The shield is decorated with simple geometric patterns, giving the piece a strong archaic and military character.
The simplified facial features, upright posture, painted surface, and protective shield suggest a style associated with Chinese funerary pottery figures of the Northern Dynasties period, particularly the Late Northern Wei to Northern Qi period. Such figures were commonly placed in tombs as guardian or attendant figures, symbolizing protection, status, and service in the afterlife.
Catawiki disclaimer: This object has been dated based on style by the seller . No further tests, such as, a TL test, lapidary tests, analysis of pigments or radiography scans have been conducted to check the integrity of the piece.
