Sasha Eisenman - California Girls - 2014

For the American photographer Sasha Eisenman, California evokes a mood and a lifestyle, recalling not only the golden light, the blue sky, the beaches, the deserts, the canyons and the mountains, but also a specific image: the 'California girl'. Sasha Eisenman: California Girls captures this icon and her environment, examining her representations through nudity and semi-nudity against the backdrop of the stunning Californian landscapes. Using exclusively medium-format film and vintage Polaroids, Eisenman sought a group of women who could represent the unique style, personality, and vitality of California, photographing them collectively, without any styling, during garden parties, surf trips, and concerts. The images resulting from these shoots are collected in this first photography book by Eisenman. Each image is accompanied by an interview with its subject, offering the viewer visual and textual access to the sensuality, beauty, individuality, and life of the women photographed. Eisenman's work has appeared in magazines such as Dazed and Confused, Teen Vogue, Glamour, InStyle, Elle, Interview, Jalouse, L'Officiel, iD, V Man, Playboy, Spin and others, and she has photographed countless celebrities, from Lady Gaga to Jennifer Lawrence.
