Antique alpacca arrostiera da portata with a cloche, made by Martin, Hall & Co Sheffield in the United Kingdom, dating from 1850–1900, dimensions 49 cm wide, 38 cm high, 32 cm deep.
Description from the seller
Elegant service chafing dish with a bell (or cloche), refined antique service item commonly used between the 19th and early 20th centuries in noble residences or grand hotels. Specifically designed to present, cover, and keep warm large cuts of meat or freshly roasted joints during table service. The set consists of a broad oval base raised on shaped feet and a monumental smooth dome topped with an elegant upper handle decorated with floral or beaded motifs. The motto inscribed in the cartouche reads "LE ROY LA LOY" (in old French meaning "The King, the Law"). This particular motto belongs to the Larcom family, an important lineage of British baronets. The main hallmark displays the four letters E P G S inserted within individual Gothic escutcheons. It signifies Electroplated German Silver (that is, galvanised Alpacca/Silverplate). On the right of the four main escutcheons, there is a small additional, narrower escutcheon with letters arranged vertically (read as MH / & / Co). This is the official mark of the prestigious Sheffield firm Martin, Hall & Co. It was one of the leading British companies of the Victorian era, specialized in luxury silverware and plateware. The marks certify that the bell is an original English piece of excellent craftsmanship, produced by Martin, Hall & Co. in the second half of the 19th century.
