Description from the seller

VIKING AGE BRACELET (800–1100 AD)

Type of artifact:

An open-ended Viking Age bracelet (dated to around 800–1100 AD), worn as an ornament on the arm or wrist.

Origin and influences:

The item originates from the Scandinavian cultural sphere of the Viking expansion period. It shows strong Circum-Baltic influences, blending the decorative traditions of old Scandinavia with the craftsmanship of tribes inhabiting the southern and eastern coasts of the Baltic Sea (including the Curonians, Prussians, or Baltic Slavs), with whom the Vikings maintained intensive trade relations.

Material: Bronze.

Patina (state of preservation):

The metal surface is covered with a thick, natural patina in shades of green, turquoise, and brown (verdigris), formed as a result of centuries of deposition in the ground.

Form characteristics:

A flat, wide, and malleable metal band with slightly rounded edges. In Viking culture, this type of jewelry served a decorative function and also acted as a form of portable currency (pieces of metal were hacked off during trade transactions).

Pattern (ornamentation):

The entire decoration was made by hand using stamp-striking and incising techniques in the early medieval geometric-zoomorphic style.

Four circles with a dot:

There are four stamped circles with central dots on the band (the solar ring-and-dot motif), arranged in a tight cross or four-leaf pattern.

Decoration of 3 circles on the ends:

On both ends of the open hoop, right at the edges, there are symmetrical layouts consisting of 3 stamped circles on each side.

Incised snake / serpentine motif:

Between the circles on the ends and the rest of the band, a subtle, densely incised wavy pattern is visible, resembling a winding serpentine or a simplified snake body. It consists of small, transverse incisions and lines creating a zigzag texture, which is a direct reference to Scandinavian animal motifs that were highly popular in Viking art.

Documentation and legality:

A full certificate of authenticity is included with the item. The document contains signatures and expert opinions from an anthropologist and an independent archaeology and excavation expert specializing in artifacts from that historical period.

Provenance: Private collection (F.B) United States
