These additional spotlights, often called passing lights in the Harley-Davidson world, have a history tied to safety and the iconic aesthetics of American touring motorcycles.
Inizialmente nati come necessità nelle aree rurali prive di illuminazione pubblica (dagli anni '30 agli anni '50), venivano usati per illuminare meglio la corsia di sorpasso o il bordo della strada. Per questo motivo, in Harley-Davidson non vengono chiamati semplicemente "fendinebbia", ma "passing lights" (luci di sorpasso).
They have become a distinctive feature of Touring models such as the Electra Glide, Road King and Heritage Softail Classic. The three-headlight configuration (the central main one flanked by the two smaller spotlights) defines the classic "face" of these bikes.
Tecnologia Sealed Beam: Those in the image are of the sealed beam type (shuttered beam) with Handy Lux brand, a standard technology with a transformer-powered supply used for decades before the advent of replaceable halogen bulbs and, more recently, of modern LED headlights like the Daymaker.
Design Vintage: They feature the classic glass prismatic lens and a cap with a retention ring, typical of models produced between the late '60s and early 2000s.
They were optional components and many of these vintage sets used optical units produced by suppliers such as GE or Guide, and other historic brands associated with OEM production for Harley-Davidson.
These spotlights were not only to see better at night, but also to increase the motorcycle0s visibility to cars during the day, a principle Harley-Davidson has kept alive through generations of riders.
