AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Office cabinet with a roller shutter in oak — England, 1920s/1930s

Elegant roll-top desk/office cabinet, made of oak or similar wood, with a beautiful warm honey patina and a single vertical body. The front features a horizontally slatted roller shutter, typical of archive furniture and file classifications produced between the late nineteenth century and the early decades of the twentieth century. The top is a hinged surface with a lock and key, while the interior compartment retains the side guides, originally probably intended for movable shelves, dossiers, dividers, or filing drawers. On the front there are two recessed brass handles, of a sober, functional taste, consistent with early-twentieth-century Anglo-American office production.

The compact line, rounded side stiles, the rolling shutter, and the robust construction strongly suggest English-made oak office furniture from the 1920s–1930s, close to the so-called oak tambour filing cabinets or roller shutter office cabinets. No factory marks are visible, therefore attribution remains prudent, but the type is fully consistent with late Victorian/interwar British professional furnishings of the period.

The condition is good, with wear appropriate to age and function: scratches, small abrasions, light internal stains, signs of use on the shutter and top, natural oxidation of metal parts, and some traces of former use inside. The shutter is complete and fully functional, and the piece retains strong decorative value, today suitable both as an archive cabinet and as an industrial-style furnishing element for a workshop, professional office, library, or collector’s container.
