The Bembe are a population in central and eastern Africa, settled north of Lake Tanganyika in the Fizi Territory in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, also in Kigoma Province in Tanzania and in the city of Bujumbura in Burundi. They are different from the Beembe of the Republic of the Congo who belong to the Kongo group.
The Bembes identify themselves as a sovereign state within the Democratic Republic of the Congo. However, the first State of the Babembes was created in 500 CE, bearing at that time the name Essé or Ebalo ’ya Bembe or State of the Bembes [citation needed]; on 15 April 1926, it became legally the territory of the Bembe, then in 1931, the Fizi Zone and in 1937, it was divided into five administrative sectors: N'Gangya, M'tambala, Tangani'a, Lùlenge, and Itombwe. The latter was attached, on 31 December 1947, to the legal territory of Mwenga. The Bembe of the Democratic Republic of the Congo have Baraka as their most important city.
