Description from the seller
Large vintage handwoven Moroccan flatweave rug of the Zemmour Hanbel tradition, originating from the Middle Atlas mountain region of Morocco. Zemmour Hanbel rugs are made with the thinnest of sheep’s wool yarn using a labyrinth-like weaving technique that requires acute focus and skill, with each symbol in the design created through a meticulous system of counting.
The rug features a rich composition of horizontal bands filled with dense geometric tribal motifs: diamonds, chevrons, triangles, lozenges, and stepped lattice forms. The dominant palette is deep madder red, burnt orange, saffron gold, slate blue, ivory, and dark brown — characteristic of the Zemmour weaving tradition. The border is structured with a vertical column of geometric medallions on both sides, and the lower edge retains its original saffron fringe. Moroccan Hanbel flatweaves tend to favour bold geometry and graphic rhythm, and their slim profile suits high-traffic areas, dining rooms, and wall installations.
This piece functions equally well as a floor rug, a wall tapestry, or a decorative textile. Zemmour tribal rugs are among the most respected Berber weaving traditions in Morocco, attributable to the quality of materials and the vast variety of decorative motifs combining male, female, and life elements drawn from Amazigh symbology.
Dimensions: 215 cm x 146 cm. Handwoven wool. Fringed lower border. No pile — flatweave construction.
Condition: Very good vintage condition (8/10). Minimal wear consistent with use. No holes, no repairs visible. Colours vibrant and well-preserved.
