For the TEE network that started in 1957, the Deutsche Bundesbahn developed a luxurious diesel railcar set, the VerbrennungsTriebwagen 11.5. For the design, various studies carried out by Kruckenberg since 1930 were revisited. In 1954, the VT 10 appeared on the rails for the Hamburg–Basel connection. This train had a day and a night version. The day train featured short coaches equipped with single-axle Jacobs bogies. Because this caused rough running with the VT 10, the TEE sets again used conventional bogies.
