Tulip‑shaped solid silver table goblet on a foot, dating to 1798–1809 (Directoire/Consulat/First Empire), height 12 cm, diameter 10 cm, weight 136 g, in excellent condition with minimal signs of wear.
Description from the seller
Elegant and rare tulip-shaped solid silver table or baptismal timbale on a socle, dating from the late 18th century or the very early 19th century (period 1798–1809).
The body of the timbale is richly engraved by burin and chasing in a double register of floral garlands, rosettes, and baskets of roses. It presents a central shield adorned with a ribbon knot and surrounded by two laurel branches, bearing the monogram “M” finely calligraphed. The socle is outlined by a magnificent raised-gadrooned frieze, typical of French Neoclassical craftsmanship.
Pendants (perfectly legible on the reverse):
Punctuation mark of title: The “Old Man” (Michelangelo), official guarantee of the French State for solid silver.
Assay/Corporate mark: Letter-date “L” inscribed in a square.
Goldsmith’s mark: Inscribed in a vertical diamond with initials and central symbol (see photos).
Characteristics & Condition:
Material: Solid silver (French Sterling Silver)
Era: Directoire / Consulat / Premier Empire (1798–1809)
General condition: Good overall with a magnificent period patina. Noting a slight deformation/dent from use on one side (visible in the overall photos, easily straightened by a professional), which does not diminish the charm of this bicentennial piece. Interior intact with traditional turning marks.
