Description from the seller
They are two neo-Gothic candelabras from the 19th century that unfold all the fantastic theater characteristic of 19th-century historicism, where gilded bronze ormolu craftsmanship was used to recreate symbolic creatures and imagined architectures. Here, the gargoyles become absolute protagonists: hybrid, tense figures with folded wings and elongated bodies that seem to rise from a medieval temple reinvented by the romantic sensibility of the 19th century.
Each gargoyle holds the candlestick as if it were a natural extension of its anatomy. The curved, almost serpentine neck rises with a vigilant gesture, while the wings, worked with meticulous texture, add depth and drama. The ormolu gold accents the reliefs and gives the creatures a solemn, almost liturgical shine, which contrasts with the contained ferocity of their forms.
The bases, compact and balanced, anchor the figures firmly, reinforcing the sense of functional sculpture. They are not mere candelabras: they are small fantastic architectures, objects that seem to have been drawn from a Gothic choir or from a medieval bestiary reinterpreted by a bronze-worker of the Second Empire. The symmetry between the two pieces creates a powerful visual dialogue, like two guardians facing each other, protectors of the light.
Overall, these neo-Gothic candelabras are a magnificent example of the 19th century’s taste for the medieval, the mythical, and the ornamental, combining virtuoso craftsmanship, historical imagination, and gilding that enhances every detail.
Certified shipment and good packaging.
