Description from the seller
Dutch wall barometer in a mahogany case with a tympaniform pediment, decorated with marquetry of different woods and equipped with tin dial plates
A Dutch wall barometer in a mahogany case with a tympan is a classic mercury barometer from the 18th or 19th century.
These showpieces have an oak core with mahogany veneer and are characterized by a clean, triangular or curved tympan (triangular pediment) at the top.
They are often finished with fine inlay work (marquetry), brass details and silvered or tin dial plates.
The barometer is built according to a number of standard features and stylistic elements: Carving and crown:
The tympan is sometimes equipped with a tooth-like molding and is frequently crowned with a wooden or gilded vase ornament.Uurwerk (movement):
This type of barometer uses a so-called counterweight tube.
The scale indicates atmospheric pressure in centimeters or millimeters and is often signed by a Dutch instrument maker.
Dimensions: These barometers typically have a length ranging from 100 cm to about 145 cm
Antique specimens in good original condition retain their value very well. The interior (the glass tube with mercury) is very fragile and must be carefully blocked or emptied during relocation to avoid breakage.
